Maccabi Tel Aviv Midfielder Christian Blic Weighs Permanent Stay in Israel

Maccabi Tel Aviv midfielder Christian Blic has expressed a strong desire to remain in Israel permanently, citing his deep affection for the country and its people. In an interview with Serbian journalist Vladimir Trifunovic, Blic revealed that he considered moving to Israel eight years ago while playing in England, a move his agent discouraged at the time.

Blic described Israel as the most beautiful country he has visited, emphasizing that despite occasional security concerns, daily life continues normally, and the media often exaggerates the situation. He recounted an instance during the Gaza conflict where Israeli media reported severe damage to Tel Aviv, while a friend sent him videos showing the city functioning as usual with full beaches. He also noted the positive interactions he has witnessed between Jewish and Muslim Israelis, including within his own team.

He recounted a "sign from God" that solidified his decision to stay with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Facing a potential contract buyout due to numerous injuries, Blic prayed for a sign on the beach. Upon exiting the water, he was recognized and cheered by a group of people, which he interpreted as divine confirmation to remain. Shortly after, the club's president contacted him to confirm they were exercising their option to buy his contract, expressing faith in him despite his injury record.

Blic also discussed his initial integration into Israeli football, noting that his performance exceeded his expectations before a series of injuries hampered his playing time. He feels a strong emotional connection with Israeli fans, who he believes appreciate his passion for the game, a stark contrast to the more transactional relationships he experienced in Western Europe. He is also learning Hebrew and hopes to continue his studies once fully recovered.

Reflecting on Israeli society, Blic highlighted the strong sense of family and patriotism, noting that while athletes may receive different treatment, he feels at home. He also commented on the management of Maccabi Tel Aviv, acknowledging that like any organization, it has its interests, but praised the club's consistent large fan turnout. He also observed that while incidents of violence can occur, Israeli society is generally more tolerant than perceived, citing an example of opposing fans mingling without issue after a derby match.
