Former Maccabi Haifa Defender Recalls Surprising Welcome in Israel

Former Maccabi Haifa defender Edin Cocalić has reflected on his three-year tenure with the Israeli club, from January 2012 to winter 2015, during which he made 95 appearances and scored three goals. Cocalić, who joined from Greek club Panionios due to financial difficulties there, initially harbored fears about moving to Israel as a Muslim.

He was persuaded to join Maccabi Haifa by the prospect of playing for a top club, with a fellow Bosnian player telling him, "Maccabi Haifa is like Real Madrid in Israel. You will get a chance to prove yourself." The financial offer was also significant. Cocalić described his time in Haifa as a beautiful experience, highlighting the sunny weather and the club's consistent championship contention. He praised the club's management, respect shown to players, and overall conditions, contrasting it with the strong rival Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Cocalić admitted he had reservations before arriving, influenced by negative media portrayals of Israel. However, upon arrival, he was taken to an Arab restaurant in the Muslim part of the city, a gesture he felt was intended to show him the reality of the place. He noted that Muslim players observed Ramadan without issue and that everyone was treated with basic respect, leading to a surprisingly positive experience.

Cocalić expressed some regret about not playing in one of Europe's top five leagues, feeling he should have pursued a move westward. He retired from active play two years ago and recently summarized his career in Bosnia.
