Ex-Maccabi Haifa Defender Recalls Club's Prestige and Positive Experience

Edin Cocalić, a Bosnian defender who played for Maccabi Haifa for three years between January 2012 and winter 2015, reflected on his time in Israel. Cocalić made 95 appearances for the club, scoring three goals, before leaving for a free transfer to Mechelen. He recently retired from playing and discussed his career in an interview.

Cocalić explained his move to Maccabi Haifa stemmed from financial difficulties at his previous club, Panionios in Greece. With his daughter recently born and limited funds, he sought a move despite strong performances. Although offered a potential transfer to AEK Athens if he waited until summer, his club needed immediate funds. Maccabi Haifa presented a financially attractive offer, and he was told the club was considered the "Real Madrid of Israel."

Despite regretting not playing in one of Europe's top five leagues, Cocalić described his three years in Haifa as a beautiful experience. He highlighted the pleasant climate, the club's consistent fight for the championship, and the excellent treatment he received. He noted Maccabi Haifa was the first large club he experienced with good management, respect, and conditions for players.

Cocalić also addressed initial fears about moving to Israel as a Muslim, having read negative reports. Upon arrival, he was taken to an Arab restaurant in the Muslim quarter of the city, which he felt was a deliberate gesture to show him the reality of his new environment. He observed that Muslim players observed Ramadan without issue and that everyone was treated with basic respect, leaving him positively surprised and feeling no different due to his religious background.
