Israeli Airlines Cancel Dubai Flights Amid Security Dispute

Thousands of Israeli travelers face flight cancellations to Dubai as Israeli airlines have yet to receive necessary security approvals to resume service. Arkia, Israir, and El Al have all announced cancellations or suspensions, leaving passengers, including those with one-way tickets from Dubai back to Israel, concerned about being stranded.

The impasse stems from heightened security demands by Israel's Shin Bet (General Security Service). According to reports, the Shin Bet requires an additional security screening for luggage on flights operated by Israeli carriers, using CT scanners that Israel would provide, even though Dubai International Airport has an advanced baggage handling system. The United Arab Emirates reportedly objects to this extra screening, and high-level efforts are underway to resolve the dispute.

Arkia had sold tickets for flights to and from Dubai through early October, despite not having the required approvals. The airline has since notified customers of cancellations, with reports indicating this extends until the end of October. El Al has suspended its Dubai operations until November 30, 2026, citing security directives.

Israeli airlines had previously appealed to the head of the Shin Bet, David Zini, requesting approval to resume flights, emphasizing the significant economic importance of the route, especially with the Sukkot holiday and winter season approaching. The disruption not only impacts the airlines financially but also creates uncertainty for travelers who have already planned their trips, particularly those relying on one-way return flights.
