Israel-Dubai Flights Halted for Israeli Carriers Amid Security Dispute

Israeli airlines are currently prohibited from operating flights to Dubai due to a security directive that remains in effect until October 31. While Israeli travelers can still reach Dubai using foreign airlines like Flydubai and Etihad, the restriction poses a significant risk to those who have already booked flights with Israeli carriers for November and beyond. If the security limitation is extended, thousands of tickets purchased for future travel could be canceled.

The underlying reason for the ban, according to senior aviation industry sources, is not a specific threat to aircrews or aircraft. Instead, it stems from disagreements between Israeli and Dubai security apparatuses regarding operational procedures and required airport approvals. Until this dispute is resolved, Israeli airlines cannot resume flights to the destination.

This situation is not unprecedented. A similar security directive from the Shin Bet previously prevented Israeli airlines from landing in Paphos, Cyprus, though flights were rerouted to Larnaca, which is about an hour's drive away. Foreign airlines were permitted to continue flying to Paphos, highlighting how such directives can disproportionately affect Israeli carriers.

The disparity arises because Israeli airlines must adhere to Israeli security regulations, while foreign airlines are subject to the rules of their countries of registration. This can lead to scenarios where Israeli flights are grounded to a destination while foreign carriers continue to operate the same route. For Israeli passengers, this means reduced direct flight options during such periods, though travel via foreign airlines may still be possible.
