Iran Nuclear Program, Abraham Accords, and Election Disputes Dominate Israeli News

Representatives from Israel, the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco convened in New York for a joint meeting, the first since January 2023, to discuss strengthening the Abraham Accords. The N7 Foundation organized the roundtable, which was also attended by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Evelyn Higginbotham, and a representative from Kazakhstan. The U.S. has faced challenges in expanding the accords since the outbreak of the Gaza war.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi stated in a Fox News interview that the U.S. holds the power to end the war in Iran, asserting, "America is the one that has to decide whether it wants to end it or not." Raisi previously told the UN General Assembly that Tehran would never yield to U.S. pressure, despite significant differences on ending the conflict. U.S. President Donald Trump had previously threatened to "destroy" Iran if a peace deal wasn't reached, while also hinting at a potential imminent agreement. The war, which began on February 28th with U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran followed by Iranian retaliation against Israel and U.S. bases in Gulf states, has seen shifting objectives from the U.S., including weakening Iran's nuclear capabilities, a claim Iran denies while asserting its right to peaceful nuclear technology under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

In Israel, the Central Elections Committee, headed by Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg, held a hearing regarding a petition to disqualify Balad party chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh from running in elections. The Balad political bureau was scheduled to meet to discuss the possibility of the Supreme Court upholding the Central Elections Committee's decision against Abu Shehadeh.

Meanwhile, Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, attempted to present an Iranian diplomat with a Starlink terminal, similar to one used by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting it could help the Iranian people achieve freedom. The Iranian representative did not respond. The Iranian government had previously imposed an internet shutdown for months in response to widespread protests, which officially ended in late May.

Separately, the Chiefs of Staff from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan are set to hold an urgent meeting to discuss ways to assist Riyadh amidst joint defense agreements, following Houthi attacks from Yemen on the Kingdom, as announced by the Saudi Foreign Ministry.
