Maccabi Tel Aviv Falls in EuroLeague Opener, Faces Contract Talks

Maccabi Tel Aviv began their EuroLeague season with a disappointing 84-74 loss to ASVEL Villeurbanne. The team struggled offensively, with coach Oded Katash noting confusion and a lack of spacing. "We weren't spaced enough in the right places, offensively we were very confused," Katash stated after the game. "We made adjustments in the second half, but we weren't calm enough offensively."

Only three players scored in double figures for Maccabi: Jalen Reynolds with 15 points and 6 assists, Roman Sorkin with 13 points and 5 rebounds, and Yovel Zoosman with 13 points, 8 assists, and 3 rebounds. Several new signings had limited impact, including Bonzie Colson who played under nine minutes due to illness, and Keeton Wallace who scored only 2 points and committed four fouls in just over 12 minutes. Turnovers were a significant issue, with Maccabi losing the ball 20 times in total, leading to easy points for the opponent.

Despite moments of good play, particularly a strong third quarter, the team couldn't maintain momentum. "We had a lot of turnovers that led to a lot of easy points for them, and that disrupted our defensive plan a bit," the coach explained. The team acknowledges the need for rapid improvement, with Katash emphasizing, "We don't have too much time. We have three games next week. We need to learn from this quickly, keep our heads up, and be ready for the next challenge."

In other news, Maccabi Tel Aviv has reached a preliminary agreement with Roman Sorkin on a new four-year contract, reportedly worth around $1.5 million. However, finalization is pending resolution of remaining differences regarding the total sum and an exit clause. Both parties are reportedly eager to conclude the deal.
