Israeli Sports Commentators Criticize Player's Goal Celebration

Awad received a yellow card for his goal celebration, which involved interacting with a corner flag, leading to his dismissal as he had already been cautioned earlier in the game. The decision sparked strong reactions from Israeli sports channel commentators.

Commentators largely viewed the celebration as inappropriate and potentially provocative, with Ran Melubani calling it "childish" and questioning Awad's judgment. Moshe Primov described the celebration as "bizarre," suggesting players should celebrate with teammates instead of drawing attention to themselves. Nadav Yacobi expressed regret, attributing the referee's decision to a lack of understanding of Israeli celebrations, stating, "It's a shame." Assaf Ackerman, however, argued that the referee "greatly exaggerated," noting that the celebration was not clearly directed at the crowd and that VAR could not intervene due to a lack of clear-cut evidence. He also pointed out that Awad had performed a similar celebration previously without penalty.

Melubani further elaborated that Awad's actions were not just "near the corner flag" but involved "pulling out the corner flag and celebrating with it childishly," urging the player to find a different, more mature way to celebrate, especially after receiving a yellow card. Yacobi questioned why Awad would give the referee an opportunity to issue a second yellow card. The incident occurred during a match where Israel was reduced to ten players.
