Carrefour Scraps 'Basket of Israel' Program, Prices to Rise
Carrefour Israel announced it will end its "Basket of Israel" initiative on October 14, a move expected to increase the prices of approximately 100 basic products. The program, launched in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy, aimed to lower the cost of essential groceries for Israeli consumers.
Despite Carrefour being the cheapest option for 68% of the 103 products in the basket, the initiative did not lead to a general decrease in prices or a reduction in the cost of living. The company reportedly benefited from public campaign funding without fully committing to the program's long-term goals, choosing not to exercise its option for a six-month extension.
Carrefour is replacing the "Basket of Israel" with a new, ongoing promotion called "Carrefour Special Deal." This new campaign will feature deep discounts on various products throughout the year, available both in Carrefour's 144 physical stores and online.
Carrefour CEO Inbal Harson stated that the "Basket of Israel" will continue until October 14, after which the "Carrefour Special Deal" will launch, offering strong and diverse promotions across all formats and locations. The company cited cost-benefit considerations for ending the previous program, with the timing coinciding conveniently with the end of the initial period and upcoming elections.
