Meta Unveils Lightweight VR Headset, AI Agent Upgrades, and Camera-Free Smart Glasses

At its annual Meta Connect conference, Meta announced a range of new hardware and AI advancements, positioning itself at the forefront of artificial intelligence and wearable computing. The company showcased its new AI agent, Muse, highlighting significant upgrades to its capabilities, including full control over computer applications, the ability to process tasks via dedicated email, and a new voice engine, Muse Voice, allowing for personalized agent personalities and voices. Meta also introduced a new cloud security architecture called "Secure and Confidential Processing" to ensure user privacy during voice interactions.

The centerpiece of the event was the Meta VR Glasses, an advanced virtual reality headset weighing just 100 grams, a fifth of the weight of the Quest 3. These glasses feature micro-OLED displays with a resolution of 2412x2288 per eye, a 120Hz refresh rate, and are powered by a Snapdragon Reality Elite processor. The hardware is split between the glasses and a compact computing unit, offering an IMAX Enhanced entertainment experience, virtual multi-screen productivity environments, and access to over 75 games. The VR glasses are slated for release in Spring 2027 for $1,299.

Addressing privacy concerns, Meta launched the Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses, a camera-free model focused on premium audio, calls, and AI assistant interaction, weighing only 43 grams and offering up to 12 hours of battery life. The third generation of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses was also revealed, featuring upgraded 3K Ultra HD cameras, a 12-megapixel sensor, enhanced microphones, and a new "Hearing Enhancement" feature that functions as an FDA-approved hearing aid. Special collections designed by Kylie Jenner and Lisa, along with more affordable entry-level models, were also introduced.

Further innovations include the Ray-Ban Meta Display model with advanced heads-up display features like interactive navigation and smartphone notifications, and the Muse Charm, a small, standalone AI gadget designed to interact with the Muse agent without needing a phone or computer. While Meta is expanding the availability of its smart glasses to new markets like France, Italy, and Germany, there is currently no official launch date for Israel. The company's advancements in lightweight VR and integrated AI aim to position Meta as a leader in the post-smartphone era.
