IDF Disputes Border Police Claims on Qalqilya Tunnel Findings
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued an unusual statement on Thursday clarifying findings at a site in Qalqilya, contradicting earlier reports. While initial reports claimed the discovery of a 25-meter deep tunnel, the IDF stated that only two shafts, approximately 12 meters deep, were found. After an investigation of these shafts, the IDF concluded that no tunnel structure was present and that the shafts were not close to the seam line, a security barrier area.
The IDF criticized what it termed "irresponsible official statements" regarding the incident, emphasizing that their findings differed significantly from previous reports in both depth and nature. The military released images of soldiers from the elite Yahalom unit entering the shafts to conduct their examination.
In addition to refuting the tunnel claims, the IDF confirmed that weapons were found at the site during the operation. Four suspects were apprehended and transferred for interrogation.
