Haredi Draft Dodgers Arrested at Ben Gurion Airport Amidst IDF Enforcement Lapses

The military prison at Beit Lid Camp is holding a record number of Haredi draft dodgers, with approximately 70 individuals currently detained for failing to report for IDF service. These detainees were apprehended primarily at Ben Gurion Airport and other border crossings upon their return, often from pilgrimage sites like Rabbi Nachman's tomb in Uman, Ukraine, a destination for tens of thousands of Hasidic Jews for Rosh Hashanah.

Despite the surge in arrests at the border, proactive enforcement operations within Haredi communities have significantly decreased in recent months. This lull in activity has led to a reduction in the large-scale protests and road blockades that previously accompanied such arrests. The IDF attributes the decline in proactive arrests partly to the police, who, according to the military, are not allocating sufficient personnel to escort the apprehension operations.

Approximately a month ago, the Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, informed the High Court of Justice about the challenges in conducting these proactive arrests. The joint update from military and law enforcement stated the "significant difficulty" in apprehending Haredi draft dodgers at this time, given the potential for widespread public disturbances that require substantial resource allocation.

Meanwhile, the organization "Am Kadosh," which supports detained Haredi individuals, has distributed a guide for those in prison. The document frames detainees not as criminals but as "public emissaries" upholding religious values, drawing parallels to historical figures imprisoned for their beliefs. It includes instructions on maintaining religious observance and interacting with secular inmates.

The IDF has also observed an increase in Haredi conscripts seeking exemptions from service due to mental health reasons. Psychiatrists are reportedly signing numerous exemption requests, often submitted through law offices with similar justifications. This trend has intensified since draft notices were sent to Haredi youth and arrests increased. The IDF is reportedly discussing this phenomenon with the Ministry of Health and the police, suspecting that some psychiatrists may be facilitating exemptions without meeting standard criteria. The military has also adjusted its procedures for psychiatric evaluations to prevent fraudulent submissions.
