Teen Hospitalized in Israel After Home Hair Straightening Treatment
A 16-year-old girl from Tel Aviv was hospitalized in Holon after undergoing a hair straightening procedure at a home salon. Hours after the treatment, she experienced severe weakness, abdominal pain, and nausea, prompting an urgent medical visit.
Doctors at Wolfson Medical Center diagnosed her with acute kidney failure. Dr. Meital Kedar, head of the pediatric nephrology clinic, stated that while initial kidney function tests were normal upon admission, subsequent tests showed a rapid decline, with creatinine levels doubling or more.
This is reportedly the first case in Israel of severe kidney damage linked to such cosmetic hair products. The Ministry of Health has previously canceled licenses for many chemical hair straightening agents over the past two years. However, some illegal or unapproved products continue to be sold and used in uncertified settings.
Health officials strongly advise performing such procedures only in licensed salons using Ministry of Health-approved products. They also recommend that consumers and beauticians regularly check the ministry's official resources for lists of permitted products to avoid serious health risks.
