Juancho Hernangomez Reveals Maccabi Tel Aviv Offer During NBA Exit
Spanish forward Juancho Hernangomez, a former NBA player, disclosed that Maccabi Tel Aviv made him an offer when he decided to return to Europe from the NBA in the summer of 2023. Hernangomez, who currently plays for Panathinaikos Athens, described the decision to choose a European team as very difficult.
He explained that his brother, Willy Hernangomez, had just signed with Barcelona and urged him to join him there. In addition to Maccabi Tel Aviv, other European clubs like Fenerbahce and Real Madrid also showed interest. Hernangomez ultimately chose to play in Greece with Panathinaikos, a decision he now believes was the right one, despite the allure of being closer to family and friends in Spain.
Hernangomez, who had a relatively modest first season with Panathinaikos, has become a key player for the Greek team in the 2024-2025 season. He expressed gratitude for having multiple offers, acknowledging the difficulty of the choice.
Looking ahead, Hernangomez and Panathinaikos, under new coach Zeljko Obradovic, aim for a stronger EuroLeague campaign this season after being eliminated in the playoffs by Valencia last year. Their first game of the new season is against Paris.
