IDF Prepares for Wave of Copycat Attacks After West Bank Terror Incident

Following a deadly terror attack at the Beit Sira checkpoint, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is bracing for potential copycat incidents, according to a report by Galei Tzahal (Army Radio). Central Command is concerned about "inspiration attacks" where individuals are motivated by previous acts of terror. In response, the IDF Chief of Staff has ordered the activation of Division 98, which will assume command over the Gush Etzion and Judea brigades. Simultaneously, the West Bank Division will command the Benjamin, Samaria, Ephraim, and Menashe brigades, effectively dividing the entire West Bank between these two divisions. The IDF stated this reorganization aims to enhance command and control across the region, particularly given its expanded operational area in recent years. The activation of Division 98 is a precautionary measure, not based on specific new intelligence about imminent attacks, but rather on preparing for various scenarios.

The concerns extend beyond lone attackers, as the IDF has identified numerous attempts to orchestrate attacks in the West Bank from Gaza and abroad, including from Hamas infrastructure in Gaza and its headquarters in Turkey. Current tensions in the region are high, exacerbated by upcoming holidays, the olive harvest season, and approaching elections, alongside existing friction between Israelis and Palestinians.

Initial investigations into the Beit Sira attack indicate the perpetrator acted alone. After leaving his village, he accelerated towards the checkpoint, surprising soldiers and running over one of them. He then exited his vehicle and attacked other soldiers before being neutralized by forces at the scene. The Beit Sira checkpoint, manned by the Maccabim Battalion, connects Palestinian and Israeli territory. The attack occurred during a routine inspection of a police vehicle carrying an officer and an IDF soldier.
