Balad Party Leader Considers Withdrawing Knesset Candidacy

Sami Abu Shehadeh, the chairman of the Balad party, is reportedly considering withdrawing his candidacy for the 26th Knesset and foregoing an appeal to the Supreme Court. This comes after the Central Elections Committee disqualified him from running.

The move being considered by the party aims to prevent the Supreme Court from setting a legal precedent regarding the line between political speech and support for armed struggle by a terror organization. If Abu Shehadeh chooses not to appeal, the High Court will not have to rule on whether the evidence against him justifies disqualification under Basic Law: The Knesset, Section 7A.

His disqualification by the Elections Committee was based on statements he made on October 8, 2023, and followed the Attorney General's assessment that the evidence apparently indicated support for armed struggle. Abu Shehadeh has denied the claims, stating during the hearing that he has never called for violence. A final decision on the matter has not yet been made by the Balad faction.
