Veteran Footballer Shery Closes Door on Suriname National Team Comeback

Veteran midfielder Shery, 38, who is remembered as one of the top foreign players in Israel in recent years, is still performing strongly in the Dutch league for NEC Nijmegen. Shery had previously retired from the Suriname national team but returned last year in an attempt to help them qualify for the World Cup. However, Suriname was eliminated in the playoffs by Bolivia, marking the end of his international career.

Recently, the new Suriname coach, Henk Fraser, contacted Shery to persuade him to make another comeback to the national team. "He called me and really wanted me to be part of the team," Shery stated. "We spoke last week, but important weeks are coming up for me and for Nijmegen. It's important for me to be here, and I want to focus on staying fully fit and doing everything for Nijmegen."

Shery definitively closed the door on any further national team appearances, explaining, "I've closed the door on returning to the national team. I'm done. While some of the guys will play with their national teams, the rest will have a break, and it's important to clear your head a bit. I want to spend time with family or friends and relax. We'll come back refreshed, return to training, and everything will be fine."

This season, Shery has played 11 games for Nijmegen, scoring three goals and providing two assists. In total for Nijmegen, across 66 appearances in all competitions, he has scored 19 goals and contributed 13 assists.
