Shery Refuses Suriname National Team Comeback, Cites Club Focus

Former Maccabi Haifa star Tjaronn Chery, now 38 and playing in the Dutch league for NEC Nijmegen, has rejected an offer to return to the Suriname national team. Chery, who had previously retired from international duty, had briefly returned last year to help Suriname attempt to qualify for the World Cup, but they were eliminated in the playoffs by Bolivia.

New Suriname coach Henk Fraser contacted Chery, urging him to rejoin the squad. However, Chery explained his decision, stating, "It is important for me to be here, and I want to focus on maintaining full fitness and doing everything for NEC Nijmegen." He emphasized his commitment to his club during a crucial period of the season.

"I have closed the door on returning to the national team," Chery stated. "I am done. While some guys will play with their national teams, others will have a break, and it's important to clear the head a bit. I want to spend some time with family or friends and relax. We will return refreshed, return to training, and everything will be fine."

Chery has had a strong season so far for NEC Nijmegen, scoring three goals and providing two assists in 11 appearances. Across 66 appearances for the club in all competitions, he has scored 19 goals and contributed 13 assists.
