Supreme Court President Solberg to Vote for Disqualification of MK Abu Shehadeh

Supreme Court President Judge Amos Solberg announced he will break with the tradition of chairpersons remaining neutral and will vote in favor of disqualifying MK Sami Abu Shehadeh. Solberg explained his decision, stating, "I did not find a satisfactory answer, and therefore, although it is rare, I am voting for disqualification. If there is a case where the application is clear, this is the case."

This unusual step by the Supreme Court president comes as the court deliberates on the disqualification of Abu Shehadeh, a member of the Knesset for the Balad party. The Central Elections Committee had previously voted to disqualify Abu Shehadeh, but the decision was appealed to the Supreme Court.

The grounds for the disqualification attempt reportedly stem from Abu Shehadeh's alleged support for a bi-national state and his past statements and actions, which critics argue demonstrate opposition to Israel's existence as a Jewish and democratic state. The Supreme Court's final decision on the matter is expected soon and could set a precedent for future disqualification cases.
