Israel's SPYDER Missile System Surpasses Iron Dome in Global Sales

Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is in advanced negotiations with the Czech Republic for a multi-billion shekel deal to sell its SPYDER air defense system. This follows a major deal with Romania approximately three months ago, valued at around 2 billion euros. The SPYDER system has reportedly been sold to countries on nearly every continent, with growing international interest.

The SPYDER is an advanced air defense system capable of intercepting various aerial threats, including drones, aircraft, helicopters, and short-range ballistic missiles, using Rafael's Python and Derby missiles. It was first launched in 2005 and offers versatile solutions, including an "All-in-ONE" configuration that integrates radar, electro-optical systems, and missiles onto a single vehicle, ideal for point defense or protecting maneuvering forces.

SPYDER has been sold to numerous countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa. Notable sales include a 2021 deal with the Czech Republic for four batteries, a significant transaction with Romania, and a recent 3.1 billion euro deal with Greece for a multi-layered defense system including SPYDER and other Israeli-made systems. The Philippines has also acquired three SPYDER batteries, and the United Arab Emirates purchased the system for approximately $460 million in 2022. Morocco reportedly deployed the system in 2023.

Several factors contribute to SPYDER's global appeal. Unlike Israel's Iron Dome, David's Sling, and Arrow 3 systems, SPYDER is not extensively used operationally by the Israeli military, which simplifies export approval processes. Furthermore, it is a 100% Israeli product, unlike systems with significant US involvement, allowing sales without requiring Washington's approval. Rafael's strong reputation and the global trust in Israeli defense industries, coupled with timely delivery commitments, also enhance its market position.

Air defense systems have become a central focus of Israeli defense exports, accounting for approximately 48% of total sales in 2024, largely due to the Arrow 3 deal with Germany. This trend is driven by global security concerns, including the escalating threat from Russia and potential conflicts in the Asia-Pacific region, leading many nations to invest heavily in air defense capabilities. SPYDER's combination of diverse capabilities and a competitive price point positions it as a highly sought-after system in the global market.
