Romania Acquires Rafael's SPYDER Air Defense System, Eyes Iron Dome Deployment
Romania is set to purchase the SPYDER air defense system from Israeli defense company Rafael in the largest deal in Rafael's history, marking a significant shift in NATO's air defense capabilities. The SPYDER system offers rapid response interception against a wide range of threats including aircraft, drones, helicopters, and tactical ballistic missiles. This acquisition comes amid ongoing security concerns related to the war in Ukraine and persistent Russian drone threats along Romania's borders.
The SPYDER system utilizes proven Python-5 and Derby missiles, capable of operating in all weather conditions and simultaneously tracking up to 500 targets. Romania joins an elite group of countries operating SPYDER, such as the Czech Republic, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and India. Initial deliveries of the system are expected within three years.
In addition to the SPYDER deal, Romania is reportedly negotiating to acquire Israel's renowned Iron Dome missile defense system. If successful, Romania would become the first European country to deploy Iron Dome on its territory, further deepening military cooperation between Israel and Romania and enhancing European air defense amid regional tensions.
