Israel's SPYDER Missile System Surpasses Iron Dome in Global Sales

Israeli defense contractor Rafael is in advanced negotiations with the Czech Republic for a multi-billion shekel deal to sell its SPYDER air defense missile system. This potential agreement follows a massive deal with Romania signed approximately three months ago for around 2 billion euros. The SPYDER system has reportedly been sold to countries on nearly every continent, with growing international interest.

The SPYDER is an advanced air defense system used by various militaries worldwide, capable of intercepting a range of aerial threats including drones, aircraft, helicopters, and short-range ballistic missiles. It utilizes Rafael's Python and Derby interceptor missiles. A notable configuration is the "All in ONE" version, which integrates radar, electro-optical sensors, command and control systems, and missiles onto a single vehicle, ideal for point defense or protecting maneuvering forces.

Since its first sale to NATO member Czech Republic in 2021 for approximately 2 billion shekels ($620 million), which included four SPYDER batteries and an IAI radar, the system has seen significant global adoption. Other notable sales include a deal with the Philippines for three batteries worth about $141 million, the United Arab Emirates purchasing the system for around $460 million in 2022, and Morocco reportedly acquiring it in March 2023, with satellite imagery indicating its operational deployment.

Greece recently signed a historic 3.1 billion euro ($3.6 billion) deal for a multi-layered defense array comprising Rafael's David's Sling and SPYDER, alongside IAI's Barak MX, marking the first such integrated system based on Israeli technology. The SPYDER's success is attributed to its operational advantages and its status as a purely Israeli product, avoiding the need for U.S. approval required for systems with American co-development, unlike the Arrow 3 or David's Sling.

Air defense systems have become a major export focus for Israel, accounting for approximately 48% of defense sales in 2024, largely due to the Arrow 3 deal with Germany. This surge highlights a global demand for air defense capabilities, driven by rising geopolitical tensions, particularly the perceived Russian threat in Europe and concerns over China's military expansion in the Asia-Pacific region. The SPYDER system, offering diverse capabilities at a competitive price point, is well-positioned to meet this growing international demand.
