Driver Suspected in Fatal Hit-and-Run Remains in Custody

A court in Hadera extended the arrest of Mahmoud Samhat, 21, by two days. Samhat is suspected of causing the death of 17-year-old Amihai Atiya and fleeing the scene. Police had requested an eight-day extension, but the judge ruled that only a few remaining investigative actions needed completion.

The judge stated there was no indication the incident was intentional or that Samhat knowingly hit Atiya. However, the court expressed doubt regarding Samhat's claim that he was unaware he had struck Atiya, citing evidence that contradicts his account. The judge found it illogical that Samhat would have fled all the way to Netanya, even if he feared for his life.

Samhat's defense attorneys argued he fled because a crowd gathered around his vehicle, and he felt his life was in danger. They also claimed he did not notice hitting Atiya and that he informed his employer, who then contacted the police. The defense stated the employer was questioned and corroborated Samhat's version of events.

The police confirmed they are investigating the claim that Samhat feared for his life and are examining numerous security camera recordings, though not all have been reviewed yet. The initial investigation considered a nationalistic motive, but this suspicion has since weakened. The police also confirmed that Samhat was shot and injured after the incident, with the circumstances surrounding this also under investigation.

The judge ordered police to complete remaining investigative steps by the next day, emphasizing that further delays could compromise the investigation. If police seek another extension, they must present all security footage, not just partial clips. The court will then assess whether to file charges.
