Suspect in Fatal Hit-and-Run Arrest Extended by Two Days
A court in Hadera extended the arrest of Mahmoud Samhat, a resident of Kafr Mandā, by two days until September 24. Samhat is suspected of fatally hitting Amichai Attia during a Selichot event in Hadera. The police had requested an eight-day extension, but the court partially granted their request.
During the hearing, police stated that the investigation is ongoing and requires further actions. Samhat's defense argued that he fled the scene due to feeling threatened by youths who allegedly attacked him, and that he did not realize he had struck anyone. According to his account, he was present to deliver goods when the youths confronted him, prompting his escape. He claims he felt no impact while driving away.
The court determined that continued detention is justified for further investigative steps, though not for the full duration sought by the police. A subsequent hearing is expected on Thursday if the police file another request to extend his detention.
