Deni Avdija Faces New Challenge With Portland Trail Blazers' Guard-Heavy Roster

Israeli basketball player Deni Avdija is entering a new phase with the Portland Trail Blazers, facing the challenge of integrating into a team with two dominant guards, Damian Lillard and Ja Morant. While Avdija's standing has never been higher, his role and opportunities may change significantly.

NBA.com's Steve Aschburner recognized Avdija as Portland's MVP last season but cautioned about the upcoming season, noting a likely decrease in his touches and opportunities. Avdija's usage rate jumped to 28.5% last season from 16.8% in his four seasons with Washington, but Lillard and Morant require the ball to be effective. Adapting to the crowded backcourt is a key task for new coach Chauncey Billups, according to the league's official website.

Aschburner suggested that if Billups can maximize Lillard's performance, help Morant regain his top form, and successfully integrate Avdija with the other guards, leading Portland to the playoffs would be a major success for the coach. The long-term outlook for Avdija beyond this season remains a separate consideration.

Conversely, the "Rip City Project" offered a different perspective, with Jack Simon arguing that Avdija should remain a central player for Portland in crucial moments, even alongside Lillard. Simon believes Avdija will be one of Portland's best players for years to come and should handle the ball in playoff situations.

Simon also suggested that Lillard's return could benefit Avdija by reducing the pressure on him. He stated that having a player like Lillard, one of the great clutch performers, would alleviate the burden on Avdija, as not all offensive responsibility would fall on him during critical scoring moments.
