Netanyahu Calls for Death Penalty Implementation for Terrorists

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed explicit support on Tuesday for the execution of the terrorist who murdered Natanel Shokron in a recent attack near the Benjamin region, just days before Yom Kippur. Netanyahu made these remarks during a condolence call to the Shokron family.

Yoav, Natanel's son who survived the attack, asked the Prime Minister if the death penalty law would be applied in this case. Netanyahu responded, "This is precisely why we enacted the death penalty law for terrorists; it is fitting and necessary for the justice system to act immediately to implement it in accordance with the law." This statement is expected to increase pressure on the judicial system to advance the proceedings against the terrorist.

The issue of sentencing and deporting terrorists has been a focal point for right-wing Knesset members in recent years. A law allowing for the deportation of terrorists passed the Knesset over three years ago with a majority of 94 members, but no terrorist has yet been deported under its provisions.

Following Netanyahu's comments, a group of Likud Knesset members is reportedly planning to approach the military prosecution soon, demanding the advancement of the terrorist's trial and the implementation of the death penalty, in line with the law and legal procedures.

Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir also welcomed the Prime Minister's remarks. Ben-Gvir stated, "I congratulate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his support for the execution of Natanel Shokron's murderer, within the framework of the death penalty law for terrorists that we enacted." He added, "The path to victory over terror involves changing conceptual frameworks and creating strong deterrence. The gallows are an important tool in this struggle, as part of an overall conceptual change."
