Israeli Minister Calls for Harsher Punishments for Terrorists, Supports Death Penalty

Israeli Minister Orit Strock has called for stricter penalties against individuals who carry out attacks, specifically advocating for the death penalty. Strock stated that she sees no justification for continuing to detain perpetrators, arguing that the resources spent on their food and care are unwarranted. She believes that implementing the death penalty would save state resources and prevent the dilemma of mass prisoner releases in exchange for other concessions.

Strock's remarks followed a shooting attack on September 20 near the settlement of Nofei Tzufim, known as Halamish, northwest of Ramallah. The attack resulted in the death of one Israeli settler. The perpetrator was wounded during his pursuit and later apprehended by Israeli forces at a Ramallah hospital.

In a related incident, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that a young man was killed by Israeli forces, and his body was subsequently held. Details regarding the circumstances of this death or the identity of the young man were not immediately available.

Following the shooting, Israeli forces conducted raids in areas northwest of Ramallah, closing checkpoints and village entrances. They also raided the home of the Halamish attacker's family in the town of Biddu. These actions are part of the ongoing investigation and pursuit related to the attack.

Strock's statements come amid discussions within the Israeli government to increase penalties for Palestinian prisoners, including pursuing the death penalty in cases deemed "terrorism" by Israeli authorities.
