Israel Banks Launch Digital Deposit for Post-Dated Checks
Bank of Israel has introduced a new digital service enabling customers to deposit post-dated checks through their banking apps, eliminating the need for physical branch visits. Previously, banking apps only allowed the deposit of checks dated for the current day or earlier. Any check with a future date would result in an error message, requiring customers to deposit it manually at a bank branch or self-service station.
Under the new directive from Bank of Israel, major banks have updated their applications to accept scanned images of post-dated checks. Once scanned and uploaded, the check's data is securely stored, and the funds will be automatically credited to the account on the specified future date.
This change is expected to benefit individuals and small businesses, particularly landlords who receive multiple post-dated rent checks and self-employed individuals or suppliers receiving deferred payments. The process mirrors that of depositing a regular check: users select the 'deposit check' option in their banking app, photograph the front and signed back of the check, and confirm the transaction. The system automatically recognizes the due date and confirms receipt.
Bank of Israel has implemented certain conditions to ensure security. The physical check must be retained for 30 days after digital deposit in case of data processing issues or suspected fraud. Digital deposits are also capped, typically at NIS 50,000 per check for private accounts, with larger amounts still requiring manual deposit. Importantly, depositing a post-dated check digitally does not prevent the issuer from canceling it before the due date if a dispute arises; the cancellation order will be processed as usual on the settlement date.
