UN Chief: Geopolitical Divisions Hamper Peace Efforts in Ukraine, Middle East

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated that geopolitical disagreements prevent the UN from having "leverage" to influence wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. In an interview with the Associated Press, Guterres emphasized that the UN lacks the "leverage" to promote peace in these conflict zones.

Despite these limitations, Guterres affirmed his strong defense of the UN Charter and the territorial integrity of nations, while also condemning "horrific human rights violations." He asserted that the UN does not adopt a "transactional approach to politics" but should serve as a "beacon of values and principles for the world," advocating that the "law of force cannot prevail over the force of law."

Guterres acknowledged that this principled stance sometimes restricts the UN's ability to broker agreements, particularly when one party is a clear violator unwilling to acknowledge truth. However, he insisted this would never deter the UN from upholding the values essential for a civilized society.

He explained that the UN Secretary-General lacks an army, intelligence services, or significant financial resources, possessing only the authority to speak on global issues and convene world leaders. Guterres highlighted the "dramatic impact" of the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East on the global economy, citing rising food and energy prices, increasing interest rates, and the resulting difficulties for developing countries.

Nevertheless, Guterres expressed hope that these global challenges would foster a realization that no single entity can overcome obstacles alone, underscoring the necessity of international cooperation for their resolution.
