UN General Assembly Opens Amid Global Crises and Rising Tensions

The 81st high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly convened Tuesday under the theme "Restoring Trust, Reigniting Solidarity: A United Nations for All." World leaders are delivering speeches addressing both domestic audiences and their nations' positions on the volatile international stage. The session takes place against a backdrop of ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, Iran, and Yemen, alongside escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab, and new challenges posed by rapid advancements in artificial intelligence.

The UN itself faces increasing criticism for the Security Council's inability to address these crises, attributed to disagreements among major powers and the use of veto power. Key leaders addressing the assembly include U.S. President Donald Trump, along with the presidents of Brazil, France, and the UK, and the UN Secretary-General.

Regional leaders from Jordan, Qatar, and Turkey are also speaking, with expectations that their addresses will focus on Middle Eastern developments, including the occupied Palestinian territories, Sudan, Iran, and Yemen, as well as energy, climate, and AI issues. President Trump's address is scheduled for Tuesday morning, coinciding with a high-level international meeting on the two-state solution and a comprehensive peace plan for Gaza, organized by France, Britain, and Canada.

Trump is also slated to meet with leaders of the six Gulf Cooperation Council states to discuss diplomatic efforts concerning the conflict with Iran. Further meetings are planned with New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and French President Emmanuel Macron. The U.S.-France meeting is expected to focus on the war in Ukraine, with Iran and other issues potentially discussed in closed sessions.

Human rights organizations are warning of pressure on the international system and human rights institutions. "The international system is under pressure from states that are supposed to be committed to protecting it," stated Louis Charbonneau, UN Director at Human Rights Watch, urging member states to resist attempts to undermine international accountability mechanisms. This comes amid U.S. actions against international bodies, including the International Criminal Court (ICC), as the Trump administration seeks to shield American and Israeli officials from ICC proceedings. The ICC issued arrest warrants in 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Prime Minister Netanyahu is expected to address the General Assembly amid U.S. protection, while Washington denied Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas entry to the U.S. for the meetings, refusing him a visa for the second consecutive year. This decision has drawn criticism regarding the U.S.'s obligations as the host nation for the UN headquarters.
