Netanyahu Heads to UN General Assembly Amid Election Campaign and Protests

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is traveling to New York for a one-day visit focused on his address to the United Nations General Assembly. The speech, scheduled for Wednesday evening Jerusalem time to maximize viewership, is widely seen as carrying messages primarily for the Israeli public, with the national elections approximately one month away. Netanyahu is expected to depart New York shortly after his speech and return to Israel before the Sukkot holiday, contingent on the General Assembly's speaking schedule.

Netanyahu's itinerary does not currently include meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump or senior administration officials, nor is a meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed. His schedule, according to information obtained by the newspaper Haaretz, is limited to two side meetings with leaders described as pro-Israel. An earlier plan for Netanyahu's delegation to visit Elon Musk's SpaceX facilities in Texas was reportedly abandoned.

Heightened security measures are anticipated for Netanyahu in New York due to threats and planned protests. While the Mayor of New York, Zahran Mamdani, had previously called for Netanyahu's arrest over an ICC warrant, he later clarified he would not participate in protests but supported residents' right to demonstrate. President Trump, however, stated in July that Netanyahu "will not be arrested in any way" during his visit.

Netanyahu's plane will reportedly land at an airport outside the city, not JFK International, due to technical restrictions related to housing his aircraft, "Wing of Zion," rather than concerns about New York City's actions. His address is not expected to draw a large audience of major world leaders, as President Trump will speak two days prior. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Syrian President Ahmad al-Shar' are scheduled to speak the day before Netanyahu, who is unlikely to be present for their addresses.

Sources indicate Netanyahu's speech will address the war with Iran and cooperation with the U.S. administration, highlighting what he considers Israel's military and political achievements under the theme "Israel has changed the Middle East." He is also expected to mention the assassinations of regional leaders and showcase Israel's technological, scientific, and economic successes. The speech occurs amidst planned protests both inside and outside the UN, with potential walkouts or demonstrations during his address. Supporters of Netanyahu hope for less intense protests than last year, citing international focus on other conflicts.

Netanyahu's supporters welcomed the decision to prevent Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas from traveling to New York, forcing him to deliver his address via video. The organization "UnXeptable" announced a protest in Union Square on Thursday, while Jewish community groups are organizing pro-Netanyahu events.

Netanyahu, who has extensive experience addressing the UN since the 1980s, has a history of using the international platform for domestic messaging. This will be his fourth address during his current term. Previous speeches focused on Saudi relations, Iran's nuclear program, and Palestinian policy, or were linked to significant events like the assassination of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and controversial broadcasts into Gaza. The speech comes as U.S. polls show declining support for Israel among segments of the American public, a trend attributed partly to Israel's international image and the composition of its government.
