UN General Assembly Opens in New York, Tackling Global Crises

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly has commenced in New York, with approximately 130 heads of state and government in attendance. Key debates are scheduled from September 22-26 and on September 28. According to Reuters, the primary topics for international discussion will include the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as issues of food and energy security and the risks associated with artificial intelligence development.

Given the heightened tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran, the situation in the Middle East is receiving particular attention. Leaders are also expected to address security threats to shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Scheduled speakers include the Prime Minister of Israel, the presidents of Turkey, Iran, and Ukraine. The regulation of artificial intelligence is a distinct agenda item, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres advocating for the establishment of unified international rules in this domain.
