Prominent Cantor Dies During Yom Kippur Closing Prayers

Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Reiner, a respected cantor and educator, passed away at the age of 63 during the closing prayers of Yom Kippur. His sudden death occurred late Saturday night, the eve of the Jewish holiday, in Beitar Illit. A large funeral procession accompanied his remains from Jerusalem's Shagar funeral home to the Har HaMenuchot cemetery.

Reiner was a central figure in the Adat Yerushalayim 'HaMatmidim' community in Beitar Illit. He had been suffering from severe illness for the past year following a surgery. Born in 1963, he was the son of Rabbi Eliyahu Reiner, a prominent figure in the Mea Shearim neighborhood and a student of Rabbi Elyashiv. He was married and had children.

For many years, Rabbi Reiner served as a dedicated educator at the 'Kamenitz' Talmud Torah, where he influenced generations of students. He was also known for his expertise in the 'Redler' matzah bakery of 'HaBrisker.' In his youth, he published a unique commentary on the Hoshana Rabbah prayers for Sukkot, predating widely available annotated prayer books.

He served for decades as the regular cantor for the closing prayers, known as 'Neilah,' at the 'HaMatmidim' synagogue in Beitar Illit, returning his soul to his creator during this solemn moment. His passing has deeply saddened many.
