Legendary Cantor Steps Down at Kol Torah Yeshiva After Decades

Rabbi Isaiah Rotenberg, the long-serving cantor for the High Holidays at the venerable Kol Torah yeshiva in Jerusalem, will not be leading prayers this year, marking the end of an era. For decades, Rabbi Rotenberg, also a rabbi at the Gra Synagogue in the Beit Vagan neighborhood, was the voice associated with the Musaf prayers on Rosh Hashanah at Kol Torah, earning significant respect from students, alumni, and locals.

Sources indicate that Rabbi Rotenberg himself raised the possibility of stepping down in recent years, citing a lack of energy to continue in the demanding role. His departure is expected to be deeply felt by the yeshiva community, as his voice has been an integral part of their High Holiday services for generations.

Taking over the role will be the son of Rabbi Rafael Wolfin, a senior lecturer at the yeshiva and an alumnus of the Hebron Yeshiva. The new cantor is expected to blend the traditional Kol Torah prayer style with elements from the Hebron Yeshiva's liturgy.

Preparations are underway for the upcoming High Holidays, with the incoming cantor reportedly meeting with prominent students to study and internalize the prayer melodies and customs. This transition signifies a historic change for the prominent Jerusalem institution.
