Israel Chess Teams Forfeit Matches on Yom Kippur at Olympiad
The Israeli national chess teams forfeited matches at the Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan due to the observance of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism. The Israeli men's team requested a postponement of their sixth-round match against the Netherlands, but the Dutch team declined. Consequently, Israel was awarded a technical loss with a score of 0-4. Following six rounds, the Israeli men's team is ranked 48th, with a record of four wins and two losses. The team members are Maxim Rodshtein, Avital Boruchovsky, Ido Gorshtein, Yali Sokolovsky, and Ilia Smirin.
Similarly, the Israeli women's team also received a technical defeat of 0-4 in their match against Bulgaria for the same reason.
