Argentine Author Removed From Spanish Festival Over Anti-Boycott Stance

Argentine-Jewish author Ariana Harwicz has been removed from the lineup of the Cultur Alh International Festival in Granada, Spain, due to her opposition to cultural boycotts against Israel. Harwicz announced on social media that the festival management had "succumbed to fear." Patricia Escuinola, one of the festival's directors, confirmed the cancellation of Harwicz's participation, stating that the author's "firm stance against the cultural boycott of Israel" led to the decision.

The controversy began when student reading clubs at the University of Granada expressed opposition to engaging with Harwicz's works. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, Harwicz reiterated her opposition to canceling the participation of Israelis in film and literature festivals or concerts, drawing a parallel to her opposition to canceling Russian participation at the start of the Ukraine war. She stated, "I am against cultural boycotts, and I am very happy to meet people who think differently."

Harwicz was scheduled to participate in a discussion titled "Resisting the World." However, a letter from a group of pro-Palestinian activists at the university prompted the festival organizers to cancel her lecture. Harwicz claimed the festival would become "a festival without dissent" and expressed concern that "pressure groups control the entire cultural landscape." She further alleged that her removal was not due to her ideas but because she is Jewish, aiming to ostracize her.
