Gunfire Erupts Outside Canadian Synagogue During Yom Kippur Service

A police officer and a suspect were injured in a shootout outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, on Monday evening during Kol Nidre services, marking the start of Yom Kippur. The officer encountered an armed man near the synagogue, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The suspect sustained serious injuries, while the officer was also wounded. Images circulating online show numerous bullet impacts on the windows of the over-century-old synagogue. Authorities have not yet determined if the motive was antisemitic or if the synagogue and its congregants were the intended targets, though the timing and location have raised significant concerns.

The incident occurred around 7:10 PM when the officer met the suspect in the vicinity of the synagogue. The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU), a civilian agency that probes serious incidents involving police, has launched an investigation. The suspect remains in critical condition, while the officer's condition has not been disclosed. Belleville Police stated there is no further public danger and asked residents to avoid the area.

Israel's Ambassador to Canada, Ido Moed, described the shooting as a "terror attack" against the synagogue, praising the officer's bravery for preventing potential loss of life and urging immediate action to protect the Jewish community. He reiterated Israel's offer of assistance for the community's security.

Witnesses reported hearing between 20 to 30 shots. A synagogue security guard, Mike, stated that around 20 people were inside when the shooting began, and bullet holes in the windows confirm the shots were directed at the building. Norm Weddum, president of Sons of Jacob, refuted reports that the incident occurred merely "near" the synagogue, emphasizing that the shots were aimed at them, evidenced by the damage. He confirmed that the prayers were interrupted and subsequent Yom Kippur services were canceled.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford condemned the shooting, expressing solidarity with the Jewish community and emphasizing their right to worship safely. He also extended well wishes to the injured officer. The incident occurs amidst growing concerns over rising antisemitism in Canada, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau having previously warned of increased attacks on Jewish institutions and allocated funds for security.
