Israel's Avocado Harvest Set to Break Records in 2026/27 Season
Israel's agricultural sector is anticipating a record-breaking avocado harvest for the 2026/27 season, with experts projecting a total yield exceeding 280,000 tons nationwide. This figure represents a significant increase of 50,000 tons compared to the previous year's results, signaling robust growth in the industry. The "Galil Export" company, in a forecast published by Ynet, anticipates this "green gold" season will be a triumph for Israeli farmers.
A substantial portion of the anticipated bumper crop, approximately 170,000 tons, is expected to be exported, up from 150,000 tons last year. Simultaneously, domestic demand for avocados remains strong, with the average Israeli consumer eating about 10 kilograms annually, making it a highly popular fruit locally.
The economic success of avocado cultivation has spurred an expansion of planting areas. In the Upper Galilee alone, avocado plantations cover around 12,000 dunams. Farmers are also venturing into new regions like the Hula Valley, despite previous challenges such as frost risks and seedling protection.
Avocado is highlighted for its nutritional benefits, including unsaturated fatty acids, fiber, vitamins, and minerals like potassium, magnesium, folate, and vitamins K, E, C, and B. Its fiber content aids digestion and satiety, while unsaturated fats can contribute to healthy cholesterol levels. Potassium supports muscle and nerve function, and vitamin E acts as an antioxidant. The fruit also contains carotenoids, though its calorie density means consumption should be mindful of overall dietary intake.
