Unprecedented Surge in Israeli Tourists Visit Cyprus Amid Global Travel Decline

Cyprus experienced an unprecedented influx of Israeli tourists in August, with Israelis making up 23.3% of all visitors during the peak summer month. According to data from the Cyprus Statistical Service, the island welcomed 581,880 tourists in August, including 135,628 Israelis. This figure placed Israeli tourists second in number, following 177,603 visitors from Britain.

The number of Israeli tourists in August represented a significant increase of approximately 28% compared to August 2025, when 105,597 Israelis visited. This surge occurred despite an overall 3.3% year-on-year decline in total tourist arrivals to Cyprus. Other nationalities also saw decreases, with Dutch tourist numbers dropping by about 17.5% and French arrivals falling by nearly 50%.

This substantial rise in Israeli visitors is attributed to several factors, including the increasing cost of flights to many destinations and instability in the aviation sector, partly due to the conflict with Iran. Cyprus has long been a relatively close and often more affordable destination for Israelis compared to other options. Some Israeli travelers also view Cyprus as a convenient and safe option for a quick return to Israel in case of sudden security escalations.

Israelis have multiple travel options to Cyprus, with flights departing from Ben Gurion and Haifa airports and arriving at Larnaca and Paphos. Popular destinations among Israeli tourists include Paphos, Ayia Napa, Limassol, and Larnaca. Beyond beaches and resorts, many Israelis also explore Cyprus's natural landscapes, particularly in the Troodos Mountains, seeking hiking trails and scenic spots away from traditional beach holidays.
