Israelis Surge as Top Tourists in Cyprus Amidst Overall Decline

In a significant shift, Israelis constituted nearly a quarter of all tourists visiting Cyprus in August, a period typically marked by peak travel. Despite an overall decrease in tourist numbers to the island compared to the previous year, the proportion of Israeli visitors saw a substantial rise of approximately 30%.

Official statistics from Cyprus's Central Statistical Office reveal that Israelis accounted for 23.3% of the 581,880 tourists who visited the country in August. This placed Israelis as the second-largest group of visitors, following only those from the United Kingdom, who numbered 177,603. In August of the previous year, 105,597 Israelis visited Cyprus, indicating a year-on-year increase of about 28%.

This surge in Israeli tourism occurred while the total number of tourists to Cyprus declined by approximately 3.3% during the same period. Tourists from other nations also saw a decrease, with Dutch visitors down 17.5% and French visitors dropping by nearly 50%.

Industry analysts attribute this sharp increase in Israeli visitors to several factors. The rising cost of flights in recent years, coupled with general aviation instability due to regional conflicts, has made Cyprus, a relatively short and accessible destination, more attractive. Its proximity to Israel and the ease of return in case of unexpected escalation are key advantages. Furthermore, Cyprus offers diverse flight options from both Ben Gurion and Haifa airports, serving popular destinations like Larnaca and the resort town of Paphos, a favorite among Israelis. Other popular areas for Israeli vacationers include Ayia Napa, Limassol, and the Troodos Mountains for those seeking nature and scenic tours over beach holidays.
