Israelis Surge as Top Tourists in Cyprus Amidst Overall Decline

Israelis constituted nearly a quarter of all tourists visiting Cyprus in August, a significant surge that contrasts with an overall drop in tourism to the island nation. According to data from the Cyprus Statistical Service, 23.3% of the 581,880 tourists in August were Israeli, numbering 135,628. This figure places Israelis as the second-largest tourist group, behind only those from the United Kingdom.

Compared to August of the previous year, the number of Israeli tourists increased by approximately 28%, from 105,597 to 135,628. This substantial growth occurred while overall tourism to Cyprus decreased by about 3.3% during the same period. Tourists from other nations also saw declines, with Dutch arrivals down 17.5% and French arrivals dropping nearly 50%.

The rise in Israeli tourism is attributed to several factors, including the relative affordability of flights to Cyprus compared to other destinations. The ongoing instability in regional aviation, exacerbated by the war with Iran, also makes Cyprus a more accessible and perceived safer destination for Israelis seeking a quick return in case of unexpected escalation.

Cyprus offers diverse travel options for Israelis, with flights available from both Ben Gurion Airport and Haifa to Larnaca and the popular resort town of Paphos. Israelis also frequent destinations like Ayia Napa and Limassol, while those interested in nature and scenery often visit the Troodos Mountains.
