IDF Sees 'Comfortable' Situation in Gaza, May Resume Operations
A senior IDF officer described the situation in the Gaza Strip as "comfortable" for Israeli forces on Saturday, while acknowledging that Hamas, though defeated, still exists as an organization. The officer indicated that a resumption of the ground offensive in Gaza might become necessary. Meanwhile, the Shin Bet security agency continues its operations against Hamas operatives involved in the October 7th attacks, having eliminated 12 significant figures in the past two months. Earlier, Palestinian reports stated that an airstrike in Gaza City's Sheikh Radwan neighborhood killed at least three people and wounded four.
On Tuesday, the IDF and Shin Bet announced the elimination of Na'al Abu Abid, Hamas's commander of the Rafah brigade, in southern Gaza. Abu Abid had replaced Muhammad Shehadeh, who was killed earlier, and was involved in holding Israeli soldiers and civilians captive. According to the announcement, Abu Abid was deputy commander of the Rafah brigade in 2014 and participated in holding Lieutenant Hadar Goldin captive. He was also involved in holding several hostages during the recent conflict, including Sergeant Nimrod Cohen.
The IDF and Shin Bet stated that Abu Abid was appointed after Shehadeh's death and previously held various positions, including deputy commander of the Rafah brigade and commander of the Tal Sultan and Yavne battalions. He was a key Hamas figure responsible for managing the brigade's operations and directing terror activities against Israeli forces and civilians. He also worked to rebuild the brigade's capabilities after suffering heavy losses during the war. Southern Command forces are deployed in the area and will continue to operate to remove immediate threats.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement emphasizing their clear message: "No terrorist is immune, and Hamas will not be in Gaza." They expressed support for the IDF and Shin Bet's determined efforts to eliminate threats and protect Israeli citizens. On the same morning, the IDF confirmed the elimination of Rafa Abu Zamr, a company commander in Hamas's military wing's operations staff, in Khan Younis. Another strike in Gaza City killed Hamas military wing operative Muhammad Khader Fahmi Agur, who had trained militants for the October 7th massacre and continued to develop the organization's combat capabilities.
