IDF Remains Prepared for Further Gaza Ground Operations Three Years Post-October 7

Despite the ongoing challenges and the emotional toll on soldiers, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) maintain readiness for additional ground operations in Gaza, nearly three years after the October 7th attacks. While operational control in the Strip has shifted significantly, creating complex challenges, the IDF continues to conduct high-tempo offensive operations, including targeted assassinations and the destruction of weapons depots. These actions serve as a clear signal to Hamas to disarm, with Southern Command stating, "If you do not disarm, we will disarm you."

The operational approach in Gaza is evolving. Reserve soldiers from the 179th Brigade, who recently completed a tour in the Strip, experienced significant incidents, including balloon launches and explosive devices targeting military equipment. While some express concern that a transition from intense ground maneuvers to forward defense might lead to complacency, security officials emphasize that the IDF is actively initiating attacks and neutralizing threats to prevent routine operations.

IDF soldiers are operating under strict rules of engagement, particularly when dealing with individuals approaching the "yellow line." They are instructed to observe, warn, escort, and only resort to firing near or arresting individuals who are unarmed, following thorough checks. Armed suspects face clear consequences. This approach is being highlighted amidst international criticism, such as the controversy surrounding the film "All We Imagine as Light," which has leveled accusations against the IDF's conduct in Gaza.

Conversely, the IDF has also faced criticism for allegedly being too restrained. Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi stated that the IDF is the most moral army globally, adhering to international law and doing its utmost to avoid harming innocents, despite deliberate attacks on Israeli civilians and barbaric raids. Meanwhile, Hamas is attempting to reassert control in central Gaza, exploiting the entry of humanitarian aid trucks by imposing taxes on goods, which helps fund its local governance despite ongoing IDF strikes and a sense of being pursued.

The political stalemate and the potential for Palestinian Authority elections complicate any progress that could be perceived as rebuilding Gaza before Hamas is disarmed. Amidst the holiday season, political tensions, and the possibility of elections, the IDF is entering a sensitive period. Commanders are focused on maintaining vigilance, continuing high attack rates to maintain international pressure, settle scores from October 7th, prevent rearmament, and signal that Gaza remains an active theater.
