Arab Israeli MK Ahmad Tibi Outlines Post-Election Strategy

Arab Israeli lawmaker Ahmad Tibi stated on Saturday that Arab parties would support an opposition candidate for Knesset Speaker, aiming to replace the current Likud holder of the position, Amir Ohana. Tibi, chairman of the Ta'al party, appeared on the "Meet the Press" program and discussed potential political moves following the upcoming elections, particularly if a majority opposing the current government emerges in the Knesset, even without a clear coalition agreement.

Tibi dismissed claims that the strengthening of Arab parties complicates the "change bloc's" ability to secure a majority. He highlighted the reunification of three parties into the Joint List, noting that even with two separate lists (the Joint List and Ra'am), there is an expected increase in Arab voter turnout, potentially reaching 60%.

He argued that the primary divisions lie within the Zionist parties seeking to oust the government, citing their internal disputes over who would be prime minister. "The problem is the Jews, not the Arabs," Tibi asserted.

Referencing recent polls showing the opposition bloc with 52-54 seats, Tibi emphasized that a strong showing from the Arab parties is crucial for enacting change. He specifically mentioned supporting a candidate opposing Amir Ohana for Knesset Speaker, criticizing Ohana for allegedly turning the Knesset into a "Kahane-like market."

The Likud party responded sharply to Tibi's remarks, interpreting them as a revelation of a plan by Benny Gantz, Avigdor Lieberman, and Yair Golan to form a left-wing government with Arab parties. The Likud stated that Tibi's comments confirm that Arab parties are essential for replacing the government and that they intend to replace the Knesset Speaker immediately after the elections, effectively placing the country's keys in the hands of Tibi and Mansour Abbas.
