EuroLeague CEO to Visit Israel Amid Efforts to Return Games
Efforts are underway to bring EuroLeague and EuroCup games back to Israel. Shimon Mizrahi, Chairman of Maccabi Tel Aviv, and Claudio Coldebella, the club's professional manager, met with EuroLeague CEO Jordi Bertomeu and competition director Diego Guillen. The meeting aimed to secure Israel as a venue for games involving the three Israeli clubs participating in European competitions: Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv in the EuroLeague, and Hapoel Jerusalem in the EuroCup.
Maccabi Tel Aviv officially stated that no changes occurred following the meeting. However, Bertomeu and Guillen are scheduled to visit Israel within the next two weeks as guests of Maccabi Tel Aviv for an observational visit. This visit comes after a prolonged period where no EuroLeague or EuroCup games were held in Israel for over two years, until December 2025.
In March, a decision was made to hold these games abroad due to Operation "Swords of Iron" and the war with Iran. Currently, Maccabi Tel Aviv is hosting its home games in Belgrade, while Hapoel Tel Aviv is playing in Sofia until further notice. The Israeli clubs hope this visit will pave the way for the return of their home games to Israel.
