Al Jazeera Fires 24 Gaza Staff Amid US Lawsuit Alleging Hamas, Islamic Jihad Ties

Al Jazeera has dismissed 24 employees from its Gaza operations following their inclusion in a U.S. lawsuit accusing the Qatari network of supporting Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The lawsuit, filed in February 2025 by the Israeli organization Shurat HaDin with support from StandWithUs, names the employees and alleges some had ties to or were members of "terrorist organizations." These allegations have not yet been proven in court.

The firings occur amid ongoing controversy surrounding Palestinian journalists working in Gaza during the war. Israel has repeatedly claimed that some media workers belong to Hamas or Islamic Jihad. Press freedom organizations, however, have called for verifiable evidence in each case.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has been reviewing its database of journalists killed in the war. In June, the CPJ removed 20 individuals after confirming their affiliation with Hamas or Islamic Jihad. The CPJ's criteria exclude anyone directly involved in combat or inciting imminent violence. However, the organization emphasizes that membership in a non-state group does not automatically disqualify a journalist's civilian status under international humanitarian law if they are not directly engaged in hostilities.

The CPJ relies on at least two independent sources, documentary research, and field verification when possible, though acknowledges the difficulty of this in Gaza due to limited international journalist access. The CPJ condemns the misuse of the journalist title by combatants, stating it endangers those genuinely practicing journalism. The committee continues to review its data to identify any individuals involved in fighting.

Al Jazeera has not provided individual reasons for each dismissal, and the lawsuit's claims remain unproven. The legal challenge lies in substantiating the allegations made in the complaint.
