Owner of Famed 'Eden HaCarmel' Bakery Dies Suddenly

By משה ויסברג
Translated & summarized from Behadrei Haredim by baba
The story · English

Rabbi Moshe (Rahamim) Massgadian, owner of the well-known 'Eden HaCarmel' bakery in Jerusalem's Bucharim neighborhood, has passed away suddenly. Massgadian, a resident of Givat Ze'ev, was known for his kindness and generosity, serving as a central figure for locals and visitors alike.

For many years, his bakery on Adoniyahu HaCohen Street was a hub for the community. Those who knew him described him as a welcoming person who treated everyone with a smile, often studying Torah between customers.

On the morning of his passing, the bakery's doors remained closed, with mourning notices posted. In his memory, volunteers distributed challah loaves for Shabbat free of charge to passersby and residents outside the closed shop.

Massgadian had been suffering from severe, prolonged illness, which he bore with faith and quiet acceptance. He passed away on Friday, the eve of Shabbat Teshuvah (Repentance), on the 7th of Tishrei, to the great sorrow of his family and many acquaintances.

The funeral was scheduled for Friday afternoon at the Spanish funeral home in Har HaMenuchot, Jerusalem. The family will be observing shiva, the traditional seven-day mourning period, at their home in Givat Ze'ev until the eve of Yom Kippur.
