Acclaimed Israeli Restaurateur Yaakov Ben Ezra Dies at 90
Yaakov Ben Ezra, a legendary Israeli restaurateur and the iconic figure behind the renowned "Ezra the Fisherman" restaurant, passed away over the weekend at the age of 90. Ben Ezra, a beloved local figure in Atlit, arrived in Israel from Morocco as a youth and was initially absorbed into Kibbutz Hulata, where he developed a passion for aquatic life.
His early life was marked by bravery, serving as a skipper on the Sea of Galilee, ferrying fighters to the Syrian-held Dardara outpost under fire. He continued to apply his courage during his military service. Later, he settled in Atlit with his wife Margalit, working as a coastal fisherman and becoming known for his open hospitality, where every visitor received a warm meal.
In the late 1960s, the couple transformed their love for fish and hosting into a family business. "Ezra the Fisherman" quickly became a national culinary institution, attracting diners from across Israel. The restaurant was celebrated for its authentic menu and the captivating personality of Yaakov, who was a constant presence among the tables.
Ben Ezra, who leaves behind a rich legacy of hard work, generosity, and love for people, will be laid to rest today, Monday, at 5:00 PM in the Sha'ar Brosh cemetery in Haifa.
