Beloved Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh Rabbi Dies Suddenly, Family Faces Severe Financial Crisis

Rabbi Yechiel Cohen, a well-known figure in Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh, passed away suddenly at the age of 67 after a long illness. He was renowned for his devotion to Torah study and Kabbalah, serving for many years as a cantor for Rabbi Yitzchak Kaduri and praying at the 'Lasham' Kabbalist yeshiva. Despite his spiritual prominence, Rabbi Cohen lived modestly and avoided seeking honors or positions.

In recent months, he battled diabetes which led to a severe infection in his leg, requiring amputation at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. Although his condition initially improved, he unexpectedly died in the hospital after drinking a glass of water and reciting the blessing "Shehakol." His family, including seven children, now faces a dire financial situation with debts totaling around half a million shekels and no property or income.

Rabbi Cohen had moved to Beit Shemesh in the last year due to worsening economic hardship. His widow, who dedicated her life to the family and does not work outside the home, receives only a minimal survivors’ pension. Community members and charity organizations have called for urgent public support to help the family manage their debts and support the two youngest children, aged 19 and 20, who have yet to marry.

The funeral took place in Beit Shemesh, where the family now confronts not only the loss of their spiritual leader but also a severe financial crisis. A support fund has been established by Kuppat Ha'Ir to assist the widow and orphans during this difficult time.
