Purchases from specific wholesale networks are also restricted. Similar regulations have been in place for Iranian representatives in the U.S. since 2025. This year's Iranian delegation will be smaller than in previous years. The U.S., as the host country for the UN headquarters, is obligated to ensure foreign delegations have access to UN events, necessitating the allowance of their entry despite the restrictions. The visit occurs against the backdrop of ongoing tensions involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, adding a significant diplomatic dimension to their participation in the General Assembly. Separately, China has privately urged Iran to leverage its influence over Yemen's Houthi rebels to curb their military activities. This request followed concerns from Saudi Arabia regarding attacks on its oil infrastructure and threats to Red Sea shipping, as reported by Reuters, citing three sources in Iran. The Houthi rebels have recently intensified their operations in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, posing risks to regional security, Saudi oil shipments, and international maritime traffic.
